I was not joking when I said that I draw these two all the time... More SS/RB-centric doodles. What can I say about them? -I finally managed to find my own DeathEater-suit (+ mask!)and I'm pretty pleased with myself for that! -Sev's presumed greasy hair will drive me mad; -Reg's presumed soft hair will drive me mad; -Their Chibi versions don't suit them at all, but are perfect to save space and bring out some cuteness! -Sev had never been read 'The Tales of Beedle the Bard'... -What do I do when I get bored? Draw a nearly naked Reg! Slytherin fluffy slippers, of course.
'Potions and Snitches': [link] *** I'm perfectly aware that 'Potions and Snitches' is the name of several groups not only here in DA, but also in FF.net (I think it has its own dom too): and they're generally Snape-Harry_Centric groups, if memory does not trick me. I didn't mean to steal anything or give false impressions: I used that title because Regulus is a Seeker, Severus is a Potion Master and these doodles are RB/SS_Centric, so it suited.
Severus and Regulus are so much better then Snape and Harry... I really only Ship Severus with Regulus (of course in the Marauder Era) and with Rabastan Lestrange (only because I really like him and I don't think he had anything to the Longbottoms {Although I think Im the only person that ships them}) I love the way you draw Severus's heir it make him more real. The bathtub one is my favorite I love the Rubber Snitch
To everyone their ship, I say. I'm not a big Snarry fan, unfortunately, TeacherxStudent pairings are not my cup of tea. I say "unfortunately" because there are wonderful Snarry fics and amazing Snarry artists around: some of the best fanarts I've seen were Snarry... I admit I have a soft spot for Snupin, and sometimes I like to give Snack (with Sirius as the Black involved) a chance. RxS is just my OTP. I like the idea of Rabastan: we know so little about him, we can do pretty much anything with him - I usually use Evan Rosier, though.
Although I never shipped these two, I love these sketches! You drew them perfectly as teenagers--the handsome rich kid with the glorious mop of hair who exceeds as an athlete and the scrawny, poor greasy kid who is a brilliant scholar. The rubber snitch in the tub and the confused snake made me lol! Oh and yeah for the chibis and Reg's fluffy slippers!
While I can't say I'm a big Snape/Regulus shipper, I do love these drawings! Weird as it may sound, I love that you keep Snape's hair looking all greasy and gross. When people draw him with nice, silky hair it just never looks like the right character to me. ): Also love chibi Regulus chasing the snitch omg too cute. Also am impressed that you fit all of this so neatly onto just two pages. I would save a lot of paper if I could manage to utilize space so well haha.
You know, IT IS weird, because I can't really say I'm a great SS/RB shipper myself: I mean, my first impression with the characters (especially Regulus) while reading the books gave me with the certainty that they could never have got together, ever. Then I read some fictions about them (you can't say they went too much OOC, since we know almost nothing about the younger Black..) and I liked them so damn much that I just had to draw those two together (maybe because there's not much SS/RB art around?). The amazing thing is: I still think they're more than an 'unlikely' couple. My idea of Regulus crashes with all was known of Severus at the time. Just, well..no. But then, they're cute..
I have a love/hate relationship with Severus' hair. I want it to be greasy. Because it IS greasy: we're told that every single time he's on scene. Sometimes, more than once. The fact is: how on earth are you supposed to make said hair look greasy with a pencil?! We (Sev and I) are still working on it with poor results...
Regulus is funny. Sure, he's more prone to be depicted as a 'normal' guy than Severus... Dark Lord (and Sirius) apart, he leads a quite ordinary life, especially at Hogwarts: studying, playing Quidditch, hanging out with Housemates; you can easily put him in silly poses and situations, make him laugh, joke and be a teenager.
I do get the same impression that they probably wouldn't get along so well--I always thought that if Snape hated Harry so much just for being James's son, he'd probably at least dislike Regulus a little bit for being Sirius's brother (although we later learned that the circumstances surrounding Snape's hatred of Harry were a leeettle different, but still). But that is the great thing about Regulus, he's such a minor character, as you say, you can't really make him OOC. I can definitely see how circumstances might have fallen to make them friends instead of enemies. Ah, I love the possibilities inherent in writing about/drawing the Marauders' generation: there's so much freedom because we really don't know what went on other than a few brief snippets.
Also I think you did a great job with Snape's hair! I think making it look stringy like you have here goes a long way to conveying how greasy it is, and really, it fits with how I, personally, imagine him very well (which is kind of a rare thing in drawings of Snape I find on deviantart haha).
As for depicting Regulus, well, he's probably (okay who am I kidding, definitely) the character I draw the most, and I just love the freedom you have to create a character for him without being too constrained by canon. I can see what you mean about him possibly being more "normal." At least, a more typical teenage boy. I think it would be hard to grow up a Black without coming out a little messed up, though. We certainly see that with Sirius (although that can be attributed to a combination of factors). I think that as a teenager Regulus was probably just better at covering up his stunted childhood than someone like Snape. There's definitely something a little serial killer-ish about all those Voldemort-centric clippings in his room, you know?
Uh anyway so now I've rambled on incoherently for long enough. You're welcome!
You definitely have a point. To me, the handicap in their relationship is Regulus himself. I've always seen him as a dirty little racist. In his scooldays, he's a Black at heart, he truly believes in his family's ideals; as you said: he collect articles about Voldemort's attacks. He's an aristocratic Pureblood confident in his superiority. Severus is a Half-Blood and every one of his features screams 'poverty' and 'neglect'. Regulus may have respected his interest and talent with the Dark Arts, but would never have wanted to be associated with such a shame, in my opinion. Then they were both Death Eaters, but Regulus' betrayal comes secretly and earlier than Severus', so at that point there was no ground for mutual interest, as well. There are ways to make it work, and some good authors have succeeded, but I admit it's a lot of trouble. Drawing doesn't work that way, luckily.
Of course the adjective 'normal' is not the best to describe Marauders (except James and Lily, and Teenage Pettigrew, perhaps)...they're complicated (each in his/her own way) and definitely the Black Brothers did not have what we call a 'normal' childhood. But, just like Sirius, I can see Regulus hanging out with his gang, strolling down corridors, always behaving like a Black and a Slytherin, but a teenager one: something like a more mature version of Draco Malfoy, which for sure enjoys his sweets and presents at Christmas and sits with his friends in the Express. Something Severus can't do. At least, not with the same simplicity (because it's not natural for him being friendly and because he's not up to all Slytherin's standards).
Ok. Now *I* am rambling. Thanks for your words, anyway.
PS: About the hair - I actually let mine go over-greasy just to check on the mirror how it could look. I swear I've never craved shampoo more.
Oh, I'm sure they were both obstacles to any kind of normal relationship in their own ways. I know that the whole drama with Lily and James made Snape even more bitter and fucked up, but I have a hard time believing he wasn't a bitter guy, ready to hold a grudge before that. And of course, Regulus was almost undoubtedly a total snotty brat in school. I think you're right in saying he was probably a bit like Draco (but I can't make him too much like Draco or I would never be able to write/draw him at all. Draco drives me crazy), and definitely an insufferable racist.
[Although in the realm of probably unreasonable justifications, and despite the fact that I was just calling those Voldemort clippings serial killer material, in my head-canon I imagine he kept collecting them even while he was going through his "change of heart" as a kind of obsessive self-torture type thing.]
I do imagine him (in school, anyway) a lot like Sirius in many ways--haughty, egoistic, reckless, pig-headed--which are the kind of personality traits that Snape hates (even though he shares many of them in his own way). And even so, I don't think a relationship--friendship or otherwise--is really all that implausible. I think that maybe in order to build that, you have to start from the infamous "gang of Slytherins" we hear about from Sirius. That seems to be Snape's only platform for social standing, and well, he'd have to have some kind of social credibility for Regulus to pay any attention to him. Although, I've seen a lot of fics that make Regulus kind of Sirius's polar opposite: weak, shy, quiet and socially invisible. Basically the forgotten Black. And I can see a relationship developing between them much more easily if Regulus were like that: outcast bonding and all. But of course I don't see Regulus as anything like that, so it's more difficult to find common ground for them if you don't write him that way. xD
ALSO about the hair: girl, that is some serious commitment! I have done a lot of weird things trying to figure out how to get some aspect of a story or drawing right, but I draw the line at sacrificing personal hygiene. I commend you for your dedication!
Aaaaaaand I could really talk about this stuff forever, but I am making less and less sense the more I go on. So anyway, thanks for indulging my overpowering urge to pseudo-psychoanalyze Harry Potter characters. (:

Glad you like Sev's hair: greasiness is tricky.
Anyway, great work!

As for saving paper, well..I just like collages^^
Glad you liked it, thank you!
